  4. Naples: reckoned the founder of the type of Italian opera that conquered all
  5. Europe in the 18th century. Composed more than 100 operas, many now lost; 600
  6. cantatas for solo voice and continuo; various other cantatas, oratorios,
  7. masses, madrigals, etc.; also chamber music. Possibly a pupil of Carissimi in
  8. boyhood. Held various court and church posts. Father of Domenico Scarlatti.
