People In Music History
Scarlatti, Alessandro (l660-l725) Italian composer who worked chiefly in
Naples: reckoned the founder of the type of Italian opera that conquered all
Europe in the 18th century. Composed more than 100 operas, many now lost; 600
cantatas for solo voice and continuo; various other cantatas, oratorios,
masses, madrigals, etc.; also chamber music. Possibly a pupil of Carissimi in
boyhood. Held various court and church posts. Father of Domenico Scarlatti.
